Packaging is an essential element of response to address key challenges of sustainable food consumption by tackling usage and wastes issues. Home compostability is an asset for the Mediterranean region especially when appropriate waste management facilities are lacking. Including natural antimicrobials, living microorganisms/microbiomes, and freshness indicators, enables biodegradable packaging to become smart and active to enhance its usage benefit, which is the reduction of food waste and loss (FWL). The Mediterranean region, one of the world areas the most affected by climate change, is also prone to high demographic pressure, periodic political crises, and social unrest, factors exacerbating the disruption of the food supply chain and making this region very dependent on imported products and the rise of inflation. Fighting FWL in highly pressurised Mediterranean markets such as those of cereal products or fresh fruits & vegetables is thus crucial.
