Phelipanche ramosa (orobanche) is a holoparasitic weed, that is, dependent on the host throughout its life cycle, particularly harmful to tomatoes. The general objectives of the project are: to evaluate the spread and harmfulness of the weed; to create industrial varieties of tomatoes that are more tolerant to orobanche infestation, capable of allowing its cultivation management and ensuring productivity even in particularly infested soils; to evaluate the physical and chemical characteristics of the berries of these varieties to establish their suitability for industrial processing; to improve the effectiveness of pathogenic fungi of orobanche in biologically controlling the development and spread of the latter; to obtain sustainable and eco-compatible protocols for the cultivation of industrial tomatoes, to be adopted in fields infested by orobanche that allow their cultivation without the use of difficult-to-manage herbicides.
