PHENOLEXA

Benign cascade biorefinery for converting agri-food side streams into high-value polyphenolic bioactives and dietary fibres for pharma, cosmeceuticals, nutraceuticals and functional foods.

PHENOLEXA aims to create an efficient, environmentally friendly biorefinery by utilizing underexploited agricultural waste such as olive pruning residues, grape leaves, chicory, and onion scraps, which are rich in high-value bioactive compounds. The project will develop protocols for biological and physical pretreatments, followed by extractions using green solvents like natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) and subcritical water to maximize the efficiency and quality of the extracted polyphenols. The extracts will be fractionated using sustainable methods, stabilized, and characterized for their chemical and biological properties (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective). The goal is to produce functional bioactive compounds for bio-based applications in pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals, while the remaining fibers and pigments will be used to create functional foods.
